Assessing and Treating Sleep Disruptions in Anxiety and OCD

CE Hours 6

About this course

This training is for clinicians who want to increase their competence to assess and treat comorbid sleep disruptions in their clients with anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Emerging evidence suggests that these populations often struggle with insomnia, delayed sleep timing, and other sleep-related challenges. By participating in this training, you will better understand the functions of sleep and the consequences of untreated sleep disruption in your clients. You will gain proficiency administering and scoring brief assessment measures for clinically relevant sleep-wake disorders. You will learn how to conduct a sleep-focused intake interview. You will also learn and practice the central components of the gold standard treatment for chronic insomnia: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). This is an incredibly rewarding treatment to provide given its targeted, short-term, and highly effective nature. There will be plenty of opportunity to apply your new knowledge using case examples and to ask questions relevant to your clients and treatment setting.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the prevalence and consequences of sleep disruptions in clients with anxiety disorders and OCD.
  • Identify the functions of sleep, the circadian and homeostatic processes regulating sleep, and how this knowledge informs clinical assessment and treatment.
  • Describe diagnostic criteria and implement standard assessment measures for clinically relevant sleep-wake disorders including insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and nightmare disorder.
  • Describe and conduct a sleep-focused intake interview.
  • Identify and implement the central components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).
  • Generate a case conceptualization, individualized treatment plan, and identify when referral to a sleep specialist may be warranted.
