Treating Perfectionism with ACT

About this course

This training focuses on how to use acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to treat clinical perfectionism. The first part of the training will cover an ACT conceptualization of perfectionism, including how to identify it based on functional patterns and map its presentation onto the six ACT processes. The second part of the training will walk you through experiential methods to target and undermine perfectionism.

Learning Objectives

  • Define perfectionism functionally.
  • Use the ACT model to conceptualize perfectionism.
  • Identify perfectionistic processes underlying different symptoms.
  • Apply knowledge from this training to target aspects of perfectionism with each of the six ACT processes.
  • Use experiential exercises to deliver ACT-consistent therapy.
  • Individualize therapeutic approach depending on clients’ presentations.

  • Clarissa Ong

    Clarissa Ong, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral associate at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University and CBTeam. Her research interests include perfectionism, process-based therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. She has co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles, six book chapters, and two books and received funding from the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science. Her self-help book for perfectionism, The Anxious Perfectionist, is now available for purchase.
