Treatment of Problematic Pornography Use with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

CE Hours 7

About this course

Although problematic pornography use is not currently a formal diagnosis, it is a concern that many individuals struggle with and is a common presenting issue in mental health treatment. Problematic pornography use is defined as the use of pornography in a manner that negatively affects an individual's functioning, well-being, or emotional state. This course begins by helping participants understand what constitutes problematic pornography use, how to conduct clinical interviews and assessments related to its use, and how to collaborate with clients in establishing meaningful treatment goals. The course utilizes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an evidence-based approach that has demonstrated effectiveness in the treatment of problematic pornography use and related co-occurring concerns. Participants will learn about the research supporting ACT, its historical and theoretical foundations, and the six core ACT processes that promote psychological flexibility and behavior change. The treatment approach presented in this course balances process-based therapy principles with a structured treatment framework. Participants will be taught how to help clients clarify their reasons for change and strengthen motivation, develop acceptance and cognitive defusion skills to reduce the influence of urges to view pornography, address negative self-evaluations and difficult internal experiences, and respond more effectively to triggering situations. Considerable attention is also devoted to implementing behavioral change strategies that support movement toward personally meaningful goals. In addition to lectures and clinical demonstrations, participants will observe Dr. Twohig treating two actor clients, providing opportunities to see ACT strategies and interventions demonstrated in real time.

For early enrollees: Free monthly online group consultation with Dr. Twohig on the second Monday of each month, 12:00 to 12:50 PM Mountain Time, November 2026 through April 2027 (Nov 9, Dec 14, Jan 11, Feb 8, Mar 8, Apr 12). Available to those who enroll within 6 months of the course launch. Once you register, you’ll find everything you need to join in the course content.
